SWP Response to The All England Club's Autumn Community Newsletter

Dear Debbie Jevans,
We note that your recent “community newsletter” acknowledged the involvement of “an objector group” in the legal challenges faced by AELTC. Recognition at last!
But we are not a few lone voices. The objectors you criticise are at least 23,000 strong. We are all local Members of Parliament. We are the majority of local Councillors. We are all adjacent resident associations. We are Save Wimbledon Park Ltd.
Yes we object and we are proud to do so.
• We object to reduced biodiversity
• We object to cutting down ancient trees on Metropolitan Open Land
• We object to concreting over Capability Brown Landscape
• We object to fuelling the climate crisis
• We object to broken promises
• We object to not listening to local people
• We object to dismissing a better alternative.
You say you recognise the disruption to the community and appreciate the feedback received, yet you refuse to even discuss other viable plans to accommodate the Qualifying Tournament.
You ignore our concerns about increased crowds and safety in the queue.
You dangle the promise of a new public park in front of your neighbours. - but this land was a public park available to the community long before you bought it and locked it away. Your plans are for a permissive park on a tiny fraction of the land with 9 km of roads and paving on a space shared with a 30,000 square foot maintenance depot housing 80 vehicles.
The legal challenges faced by this development remain. They are not going away and nor are we, the “objectors”.
We continue to campaign for a development in which tennis and the community can co-exist in this beautiful heritage parkland.
