"The Appeal [has] a real prospect of success" said the Court of Appeal. The Court had just granted Save Wimbledon Park Ltd (SWP) permission to challenge the previous High Court decision that the former golf course in Wimbledon Park is not covered by a statutory public trust.
The All England Lawn
Tennis Club (AELTC) has been saying in public and to their members that proceeding with their plans was a foregone conclusion. The decision of the Rt Hon Lord Justice Newey to grant SWP leave to appeal demonstrates this position to be wishful thinking. SWP's appeal is expected to be heard in 2027.
"On the opening day, last month, of the 2026 Championships we repeated our request for AELTC to sit down with us," said Jeremy Hudson of SWP. "We do so again. As we have constantly said, a long drawn-out legal process isn't necessary and is in their power to resolve".
