"Wimbledon is the oldest major in tennis, first played in 1877 when Spencer Gore beat William Marshall in front of a crowd of 200. The spectators had paid a shilling (10 cents) to watch. In 2022, income from the tournament soared to almost 347m ($438m), a sharp increase of almost 20 per cent from the 2019 record. The green and pleasant land of SW19 is a booming global industry, but there is some current local difficulty that needs watering as the All England Lawn Tennis Club seeks to expand its footprint."
